description The article reconstructs the history of the García Romero family in the department of Sucre, in the Caribbean region of Colombia, as a significant case of the social and economic predetermination of political power. It is based on contextualized or sociological neoinstitutionalism to verify how in certain social contexts those who are economically powerful and exert social influence have advantages in accessing positions of political power, compared to those who lack them. In these cases, power structures are characterized by the continued presence of a few families that concentrate the main political positions for long periods. The results show the political power structures and relationships that favor the political clan studied.
